Level 2: Mood Change – Contrasting Case #2: Patient Information

Given these changes from the original case, what is your diagnosis?

What is your diagnostic explanation?

As compared to the long case, this patient is a 28 year old woman who presents to the clinic with the complaint of feeling “down.” She reports that 2 years ago she had an episode similar to this one that lasted several months. Upon further questioning, she reports that 1 year ago she had a 2-week episode in which she quit her job because she had a great idea to gamble from home to make a living. During this time she worked on remodeling her house and gambling and would go days at a time without sleeping. Her friends told her that she talked really fast and was hard to follow because her ideas bounced around so much. During this 2-week period she lost a lot of money because she gambled it away or spent it online shopping.
